12 October 2012
I transcript to acknowledge the important concerns that were raised in your letter to me dated 6 August 2012. I also want to sincerely thank you for the gift that was sent to me together with your letter.
I equally share the trepidations that were raised in your letter to me by way of formally presenting my support to the prodigious efforts that you are undertaking to advocate against nuclear weapons in your country and around the world.
Geographically, Vanuatu is located in the South Pacific and we share the firm standpoint with the other Pacific Island nations, as well as other nations around the world like Japan, to voice our firm position that we want a nuclear-free Pacific.
We are fully aware of the dreadful effects that the nuclear weapons had on the cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima during the Second World War, and people are still suffering and living with the depraved consequences even to this day.
I therefore wish to show my full support to your efforts and those of the different nations for a common effort to outlaw and eliminate nuclear weapons to ensure the safety of humankind around the world.
Yours truly,Iolu Johnson Abil
President of the Republic of Vanuatu
